About Gallery 225
Ten years ago, owner Mary Ellen Fresquez, decided that there was more to life than the everyday experiences of a corporation. Of course, there were the obvious benefits for an aerospace engineer, such as travel to the Pacific Rim and to England and heady visits to the Pentagon and K Street in Washington, DC.
But the desire to create one’s own work environment was a dream that could only be achieved by owning a business. “Do what you love.” That is the mantra for successful entrepreneurship. So in 1998, Mary Ellen started her first business, a paper arts store, Ink It! Within its walls was a glorious assortment of paper, rubber stamps, calligraphy supplies, and every conceivable accessory. The environment was creative, stimulating and restorative—to its customers . . . and to its owner.
During the nine years of its existence, Ink It! was twice selected “Best of Phoenix” as a place to learn a hobby. Many nationally-known artists taught there. But most importantly, Mary Ellen came to appreciate the artist’s commitment behind the creative process. It is this intensity within the art community that brings so much beauty to our lives.
Wanting, and indeed, needing to simplify her life, she closed her successful shop. But her dream was to move forward with yet another endeavor. For the last two years, researching and visiting galleries has been the pleasant journey leading to opening Gallery 225 in the heart of Gilbert, Arizona.
Since December, 2008, a true labor of love has transformed the 50-year-old building in Gilbert’s Heritage District from a homely Western-style storefront to a modern contemporary gallery. Mary Ellen acknowledges that many have contributed to the effort:
-
For inspiration, her grandchildren, Samantha and Jack, together with all artists who share an appreciation and awe of their surroundings.
-
For making the dream come true, her husband John, who has taken the lead in providing intense physical labor and unmatched ingenuity, son-in-law Basil, and many of John’s friends.
-
For moral support, her sister Margaret who from afar is always her loudest cheerleader.
-
For constancy, her daughter Stevie who knows the answer to every question and the solution to every problem.
